Pune is one of the most famous cities in India. Pune is especially popular among the college graduates and it is slowly becoming popular with the working professionals also. The city has very strong support systems for students coming from outside. With many international companies opening their offices in Pune, it has also become a favorite destination for job seekers.
Pune is especially popular among MBA aspirants due to large number of MBA institutes in the city. On broad level there are 2 types of institutes in the city.
1) Autonomous institutes – Autonomous institutes in Pune generally offer PGDM or PGDBM course which is a post graduate diploma in management. These institutes run courses approved by AICTE. Fee charged by these institutes is not regulated so these courses are costlier than the affiliated courses. The common issues students face is whether a PGDM degree from autonomous institute is as reputed and recognized as an MBA from affiliated college. Students tend to prefer AICTE approved institutes over non-approved institutes. Autonomous institutes are also free to design their own curriculum. This definitely helps them to align the courses taught with the industry demand.
Admission process to autonomous colleges starts with filling up an application form. The candidates are then called for interview depending on their performance in entrance test. Some institutes conduct their own entrance.

2) Affiliated Institutes – These institutes are affiliated to University of Pune. The fee is regulated by Shikshan Shulka Samiti. The syllabus taught to the students is designed by Pune University. So these institutes do not enjoy the kind of autonomy that autonomous institutes have. But these institutes offer an MBA degree. The admission to affiliated institutes is through MHCET which is a state level entrance test for Management aspirants in Maharashtra. Candidates from outside of Maharashtra (or Pune) can apply as well but the cutoffs for Outside of Maharashtra candidates are generally very high. In some cases it is not mandatory for the candidates from outside of Maharashtra to write MHCET.
The admission process to all affiliated institutes in Pune is centralized (conducted at state level) and this process is conducted from February to June every year. Each affiliated institute in Pune also has a management quota or institute level quota. Student who cannot secure admission through centralized admission process can get admission through management quota. The admissions to management quota are done independent of centralized admission process and students are required to approach institutes directly.
