Wingate University is a private 4-year university located in Wingate, North Carolina. Wingate is just six miles outside of Monroe, North Carolina, the county seat of Union County. The campus is 30 miles from Charlotte. Founded in 1896, Wingate University is situated on a lovely 400 acre campus.
The university offers 34 undergraduate majors. Undergraduate degrees conferred include Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Music Education. Among the graduate degrees offered are Master of Business Administration, Master of Physician Assistant, Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Pharmacy. There are pre-professional programs offered in law, medicine, veterinary science, and ministry.
The majority of Wingate’s 2,100 students live on campus. Housing options include the more traditional suite style dorms and newer fully equipped apartment units. Wingate University offers 8 national fraternities and sororities. Many interest clubs are available to students, as well as campus publications and a campus TV station. Weekend Blitz gives all students access to a variety of off-campus activities at little or no cost.
Athletics are popular at Wingate. The “Bulldogs” compete in 19 NCAA Division II sports teams in the South Atlantic Conference. Some of the sports offered for men and women at Wingate University are football, basketball, volley ball, lacrosse, golf, and tennis. The volley ball team is the four time defending conference champion. Intramural sports are also popular. Among Wingate’s fine athletic facilities are a football stadium, a fitness center, and a recreation complex including tennis courts.
Wingate University is located just six miles from the city of Monroe, North Carolina. A small city of 36,000 people, Monroe is 25 miles southeast of Charlotte. Monroe’s historic main street is lined with restaurants and small shops. The Victorian courthouse is the centerpiece of downtown. Movies and other entertainment are regular summer events at the Downtown Plaza. The first Belk Department Store opened in downtown Monroe in 1888. Monroe’s mild climate makes outdoor activities enjoyable year round. There are 13 golf courses in the area, as well as hiking trails, horseback riding, and bass fishing.
